Autumn

Autumn catches us unaware,
thoughts of winter suddenly there.
A time of dying in the earth
before the dawn of Spring’s new birth.
Trees quickly change to golden hue,
leaves fall gently on morning dew.
Leaving a blaze of colour there,
an endless carpet everywhere.
Swirling softly in Autumn breeze
as round about our feet they tease.
Till every branch is blank and bare
no sign of life anywhere.
But after winter’s gentle sleep
crocus from their beds will peep.
On trees fresh buds will burst out too,
nature’s cycle starting anew.
